ply-splitting
Ply-split braiding , though so recently arrived on the West's textile scene, has already cast its spell over many thread workers.
But its extremely simple and easily learnt construction, its portability, its few equipment needs would all add up to nothing if it were not for its seemingly infinite design and dimensional possibilities.
It was for me a delight to collect and collate information on five visits to N W India, almost the only place in the world where this technique exists. The resulting book (The Techniques of Ply-Split Braiding), concerned with methods used there and many I initiated, only hints at the developments now occurring especially in the three-dimensional field. These have created their own momentum; new ideas, possibilities and tricks being quickly disseminated in classes and on the internet. (see <www.weavershand.com> and <www.lindahendrickson.com> for sections devoted to PS; and see also the PS list now being re-organised)
