tablet weaving

I spent many years researching the old technique of tablet weaving and preparing a large  book (See Techniques of Tablet Weaving). By its nature it is hard to speed it up with mechanical aids, so it does not easily form the basis of a working weaver's income. Therefore despite its many attractive possibilities, I have only concentrated on one artifact, an inscription belt which I can set up and weave in a day. It is based on the Jerusalem garters of the 17th century.

I use the same 2/16's linen as in the macrogauzes usually limiting myself to the natural and bleached, with possibly a thin line of colour in the border.

The belts start with a tubular loop, woven using my pasaka principle, and end with a plied or braided tail which is knotted into the loop when worn.

The gallery shows two such belts
